In 1929, M-122 became part of the Michigan State Highway System and was initially used as a connector between US-31 and Straits State Park. In 1936, US-2 was routed into St. Ignace and US-31 was scaled back to end at Mackinac City.
Eventually, this short road (just over one mile in length) led from US-2 (now BL-I-75), heading southeast to State Car Ferry Dock #3.
After the Mackinac Bridge was completed in 1957, M-122 was retired and returned to local control, and was renamed Ferry Lane.
